5 Best Air-Purifying Plants for Better Indoor Air Quality and Your Health

by GIRIDHAR PARTHASARATHI 01 Jul 2024

We frequently resort to pricey devices and filters in our search for pure, healthful indoor air. However, did you know that nature has some of the greatest and best air purifying plants around?

We now have a list of air purifier plants that are highly effective at eliminating dangerous pollutants from the air we breathe, thanks to some research.

Not only do these green superheroes make our living spaces look beautiful, but they also provide us with cleaner, fresher air. Let’s examine the ranks, unique qualities, and chemicals that these scientifically proven plants can get rid of.

HOW TO PLANTS PURIFY THE AIR?

Well, you must be a little curious as to how exactly plants purify the air. Allow us to put that thinking cap to rest.

It’s amazing how well plants can purify the air. In addition to absorbing light and carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and using photosynthesis to turn them into energy, leaves also take up Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) from the atmosphere. Therefore, air-purifying plants have a great capacity to absorb poisons which increases with their leafiness.

One important consequence of this process is oxygen. No commercial air filter can increase oxygen content the way plants can by removing hazardous contaminants.

5 BEST PLANTS THAT HELP PURIFY THE AIR

Now that we know a little about how plants purify the air, let’s quickly take a dive into which green superheroes that take the credit!

Here are the 5 best air purifiying plants

1.English Ivy (Hedera helix):

NASA found that English ivies are among the greatest air-purifying house plants for cleansing the air. Toxins such as formaldehyde, benzene, xylene, and toluene can be eliminated by them.

They may also lessen the amount of mould and faeces in the air, according to some research. Hedera helix is another plant that absorbs humidity, so it can help you keep your summer humidity levels just right.

It is true that English ivies require a lot of indirect, bright sunlight. They enjoy lower temperatures in the 60s and humidity. Before giving them another drink, wait until the soil’s surface is completely dry. Remember that because English ivies grow so quickly, they are regarded as an invasive species in many parts of the world. To prevent them from taking over your walls, trim them frequently.

Sadly, pets should not handle this beautiful plant. If consumed, a poison present in the berries and leaves can be dangerous to kids and pets alike.

2. Parlor Palm (Chamaedorea Elegans):

The lovely parlour palm has long, glossy green leaves. It is sometimes referred to as the Bella palm or tabletop palm. It is well known that parlour palms may eliminate dangerous airborne pollutants like trichloroethylene and benzene.

You’ll be happy to hear that these air-purifying house plants require little care and can tolerate a range of lighting conditions. It thrives in well-lit, filtered light that receives little irrigation. Underwatering your parlour palm is preferable to overwatering it. Water them once every one to two weeks.

Parlour palms don’t pose a threat to your pet’s health, so you can keep them.

3.Areca Palm (Dipsis lutescens):

A common houseplant for purifying the air, the areca palm can eliminate formaldehyde, xylene, benzene, trichloroethylene, and carbon monoxide from the atmosphere. It is a lovely accent to any space thanks to its thin, arching fronds.

Bright, filtered sunshine is ideal for Areca palms. The leaves might get scorched by strong direct sunlight. They want their soil moist, but you should allow it to dry out a little bit between waterings because they don’t like soggy soil. The ideal temperature range for them is 65 to 75 degrees.

The areca palm is not only a gorgeous design element, but it is also safe for pets, so you can relax knowing your furry friend is protected.

4.Gerbera Daisy (Gerbera Jamesonii)

The Gerbera Daisy is another plant that received top marks in NASA’s 1989 Clean Air Study. This amazing plant significantly cleansed the air in just one day. It eliminated 35% of the trichloroethylene, 67% of the benzene, and half of the formaldehyde from the air.

A location with moderate sunlight is ideal for gerbera daisies. Despite their preference for strong sunlight, direct sunlight can scorch the leaves. It is true that gerbera daisies require frequent watering. Once the dirt has dried a few inches below the surface, simply give them some water.

Gerbera daisies don’t pose a threat to your pet’s health, so you may incorporate these vibrant flowers into your decor without having to worry.

5.Pot Mum (Chrysanthemum morifolium):

Not for nothing is the pot mum, sometimes referred to as the florist’s mum, regarded as one of the best indoor air purifying plants. The little yet powerful chrysanthemum can eliminate 61% formaldehyde, 53% benzene, and 41.2% trichloroethylene, per NASA’s Clean Air Study.

This vibrant air purifying houseplant is easily found and requires little more than loving care to flourish. Pot mums require at least four hours of direct sunshine per day since they adore the sun. Additionally, they are thirsty plants that require frequent watering. Examine the top inch of soil; if it seems dry, they want watering. Water them up until the bottom of the pot begins to empty.

It’s crucial to remember that marijuana mothers are not safe for pets and babies.
